Time to Party for Huntington Girls’ Basketball
With the loss to Floral Park in the Long Island Class A championship game a thing of the past, the Huntington girls’ basketball team sat back and partied on a recent Sunday afternoon, reminiscing about a splendid season, joking, laughing and even singing.
A crowd of family and friends crowded into Christopher’s Courtyard Cafe in Huntington Village to salute the 12 Blue Devil players who captivated the community and won the school’s first Suffolk girls’ basketball title. “It was a great year,” head coach Brad Reminick said, summing up the feelings of both players and parents.
The celebration was organized by parents Carol and Michael Scully. Players and supporters mingled, giggled and chatted for hours and looked ahead after putting behind them a tough loss that saw the team surrender a 15 point third quarter lead in the LI regional final.
The afternoon featured a 20 minute highlight video that commemorated the season. It produced a combination of laughs and tears. Each player received a framed team photo, depicting the squad on the court moments after Huntington won the county crown, complete with noticeable excitement on the faces of each Blue Devil.
The players appeared relaxed at the party, although many are on spring athletic teams and others are extending the basketball season by playing on AAU teams this spring and summer in an effort to further sharpen their skills.
The hot buffet proved popular with the hungry teenagers who upset Harborfields and John Glenn in post-season play. The season originally got off to somewhat of a rocky start as the Blue Devils dropped several non-league games, but rebounded from that stretch and went on a long winning streak.
Four of this year’s five starters will be back next season. Huntington will lose key guard Casey Scully to graduation, but will be returning Kerry Hicks, Maria Marascia, Julie Forster and Matte Scully. Numerous reserves also seem ready to play a larger role on the team next year.
“All of us are proud of what the team was able to accomplish this year and we’re proud of these girls,” Reminick said. “They represented Huntington very well.”
