LIRR Safety Lesson Comes to Washington School

Long Island Railroad safety expert Joe Messina visited kindergarten and third grade students at Washington Primary School for lessons on train safety and the youngsters proved to be an attentive audience.

Mr. Messina is well-known at Washington School and has been coming to the building for many years, presenting lessons on safe habits near tracks, on station platforms and while riding on trains.  He also showed students a short video on different aspects of train safety, including how to wait on platforms and step aboard the train.

Students were briefed on how to handle a variety of situations, who to talk to and who to avoid, the roles of different LIRR employees and what to do during an emergency.

“Riding the train is fun and we want it to stay that way and to keep you nice and safe,” Mr. Messina told the youngsters.
