Huntington Budget Review to Resume Monday Night
Huntington School Board members will resume their review of the first draft of a budget to fund district operations during the 2008-09 school year when trustees meet on Monday (March 31) in the Huntington Intermediate School auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
The draft budget includes proposed spending of $103,617,414, which would be 4.45 percent higher than the current budget. It would result in a projected tax increase of 4.97 percent. The tax rate would go from $183.98 to an estimated $193.13 per $100 of assessed valuation.
State aid is projected at $10.425 million in the draft budget. The plan relies on then-Governor Eliot Spitzer’s budget proposal, which he submitted to state legislators in February. District officials are hoping the final state budget increases Huntington’s state aid. The draft plan is also based on assessed property values staying flat at $46,566,020.
The draft plan was developed over several months by administrators. Trustees asked for a budget that limited a potential tax increase to five percent or less. The draft plan relies on cuts to staff, programs and other areas, such as equipment and supplies.
Trustees will examine each area of proposed spending. The School Board will hold another public budget meeting on Monday, April 7 and adopt a proposed budget on Monday, April 14. A public hearing on the plan is scheduled for Monday, May 12. Residents will vote on the adopted budget on Tuesday, May 20.
