Bagpipes Return to Southdown School
Charles Armstrong and his bagpipes returned to Southdown Primary School and Principal Michelle Marino and her students loved every minute of the visit.
It was Mr. Armstrong’s fifth annual stop at the school. “The children look forward to hearing those pipes echo through the halls as he marches up and down, closing a fun-filled St. Patrick’s Day,” Mrs. Marino said.
Mr. Armstrong is the brother of former Southdown PTA president Bari Fehrs, who helped arrange the visit. He came decked out in traditional garb, which provided the school with an opportunity to teach youngsters about the traditions surrounding bagpipes and their cultural aspects.
Students were fascinated with the different sounds coming from the instrument. They were also somewhat surprised at how loud the sound was and it filled every nook and cranny in the building.
It was hard to tell if the students or Mr. Armstrong was having more fun. This is one Southdown tradition Mrs. Marino hopes to continue for many years to come.
