District Bids Oil Tank Project for Third Time
The old saying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” can be applied to the Huntington School District’s desire to replace aging in-ground oil tanks at Washington and Southdown schools. The district is in the process of bidding the work for a third time after earlier bids came in for over budget.
District voters approved funds for replacement of the tanks and then, a year later, approved additional monies. “The Suffolk County Department of Health has revised their regulations regarding the tanks and this has added to the delay,” Assistant Superintendent David H. Grackin said.
Bids were due to be opened this week “and hopefully, the budgeted numbers will suffice for the bids we expect to receive,” Mr. Grackin said.
Huntington School Board members approved a contract with the architectural firm Thomas Associates to handle the construction phase of the two projects. The firm will be paid a fee “not to exceed $9,950” for its services, according to Mr. Grackin.
During the construction phase, Thomas Associates’ responsibilities include providing bi-monthly inspection during actual construction, attending and coordinating a bi-monthly meeting with the prime contractor and the district and coordinating the punch lists and final close-out documents.
Construction is anticipated this summer with the project being closed out in October 2008.
