Blue Devil Girls’ JV Basketball Finishes at 9-5
Shea Scully and Emma Hayes-Hurley led the Huntington junior varsity girls’ basketball team to a 9-5 mark this winter under coach Jennifer Rodgers.
Scully and Holly Helstrom captained the 10-player squad, which featured an array of young talent. While the Blue Devil varsity girls’ basketball team will return four of five starters next year, those same players will be seniors then and a changing of the guard will loom soon after. Many of this year’s JV players will be needed to keep the program among Suffolk’s elite.
Hayes-Hurley, an up-and-coming freshman point guard, and Scully, a freshman forward, will be counted on to continue their fine play in coming years.
“Emma is an exceptional player,” Rodgers said. “She works hard everyday and motivates others to do well. She was our high scorer and just as strong defensively. She was a pleasure to coach.”
Scully shined defensively, an area of the game that Huntington puts a premium on. “Shea is a true team leader and gives only 110 percent,” Rodgers said. “Players turn to her for guidance and she makes plays happen. Shea is a great athlete with endless potential.”
Hayes-Hurley led the Blue Devils in scoring. “She is an extremely hard worker and has a great amount of skill,” Rodgers said. The team sported many good players, including Isabelle Senat, who led Huntington in rebounds and Helstrom, who was an offensive force.
Yvette Hallman proved especially adept at boxing out opponents. Hallman and Courtney O’Bryan showed the most improvement over the course of the season, Rodgers said. Lauren Gerbavsits displayed real potential at guard. Freshmen Sarah Ehrman, Breanna Myers and Rameika Skinner each contributed to the winning effort in their own special ways.
“We had a truly talented team that worked hard each and every day,” Rodgers said. “They were dedicated and determined to be successful.” The highlight of the season was a one-point win over Rocky Point, the first time through the league schedule.
