Washington School Book Fair a Win-Win
A beautiful array of books were offered to Washington Primary School students at this year’s Scholastic Book Fair, which produced a stunning total of $3,200 worth of vouchers that will later be used to benefit the youngsters in a variety of ways.
Washington’s PTA organized and staffed the event, which is always one of the highlights of the year. “More than 30 parents came and volunteered during the fair,” librarian Georganne White said. The event was chaired by parent Judy Biener.
Last fall the PTA organized a special book event at Barnes & Noble in Melville. The group encourages students and families to take up reading and plans special programs throughout the year. “The PTA is extremely supportive of our efforts to get books into the hands of children and to help build a love for reading in them,” Ms. White said.
At the PTA’s Family Fun Night, Ms. White organized a “Books or No Books” contest, which resulted in many students winning gift certificates for use in purchasing books at the book fair. The contest was essentially a book title Bingo game. Winning students were allowed to pick a numbered bag. “In some bags were money gifts certificates to the book fair, in others were books, so everybody was a winner,” Ms. White said.
The book fair provided not only an opportunity for students and their parents to select interesting and attractive books at affordable prices, it also generated enough activity to allow for a significant amount of vouchers for future use by the school community.
The Scholastic book vouchers will be used to purchase birthday books for Washington School students on their big day, Summer Reading Challenge books, books for the school’s kindergarten orientation, additional books for the school library collection and for the Arts-in-Education program.
