Flower Hill Raises Funds for Healthy Hearts

Flower Hill Primary School students got all hot and sweaty for healthy hearts.  The youngsters participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program, which helps raise money for research into heart disease and increased awareness and educational efforts directed at combating one of America’s top health scourges.

Organized by Flower Hill physical education teachers Nancy Conlon and Louis R. Giani, the event was once again popular and well attended.  Participants arranged pledges amounting to more than $6,000.  Additional donations were made online.  The final total far surpassed last year’s effort of about $4,100.

Students arrived at the school early in the morning and engaged in all sorts of jumping activities at various fitness stations, including jumping over cones, “skip it” on lily pads, traditional rope jumping and jumping with hula hoops.  Ms. Conlon and Mr. Giani piped in uplifting music to set an energetic mood.

In advance of the event, the teachers discussed the aims of the program, namely to raise awareness and fund to support potentially lifesaving research into stroke, heart and blood vessel diseases and the development of educational materials.

Students appeared to have a ball, burning off some of that excess energy kids are known for.  The monies raised will also be directed toward creation of materials that will be used to teach students the importance of heart health and maintaining fitness, along with gift certificates for the purchase of physical education equipment at Flower Hill.
