Jefferson School Book Nook Proves Popular
The early morning Book Nook program at Jefferson Primary School is more popular than ever, producing enjoyable and effective educational experiences for third graders.
Book Nook, which is an enrichment program, is still going strong in what is now its fifth year. Librarian Cindy Tietjen and art teacher Maria Mazzola direct students each morning. The youngsters involved in the program are selected by their classroom teachers. A new group is arranged every 6-8 weeks.
Students typically begin their stints in the program by conducting research on an artist. They go on to complete a project in the style of that same artist. After reading a challenging chapter book, the youngsters brainstorm ideas about an art project to compliment the literature. The program culminates with a wrap-up and review Jeopardy-style trivia game called “Battle of the Books.”
Many of the student’s projects will be displayed at the district’s art show in May. The work is also featured at Jefferson’s third grade concert in June.
