Blue Devil Fencers Cap Season with Strong Performances

Huntington shined at the 45th Suffolk County Fencing Championships as members of both the girls’ and boys’ teams capped off a fine season under rookie coach and former Blue Devil great Mike Fabio.

Junior Vernon O'Garra finished third in boy's epee and senior Kaari Casey took the bronze in girl's foil. Along the way Casey handed Ward Meville’s top foil her first lost of the season.  In girl's epee, sophomore Johannah Clifford was fourth and junior Sara Conte finished sixth.

Huntington’s fencers grabbed their fair share of honors.  O'Garra, who finished the regular season with a 31-1 record, earned a spot on the All-Long Island team. Senior epee Kevin Thompson (31-7) received first team All-County and honorable mention All-Long Island honors. Senior sabre Jake Zimmerman (24-15) and junior foil Dylan Payne (23-15) were named honorable mention All-County.

The Blue Devil girls closed the season on an up note, too.  Casey (32-4) was named first team All-County and honorable mention All-Long Island in foil and freshman Olivia Weller (25-6) received first team All-County and honorable mention All-Long Island honors in epee.  Senior Nicole Palmer (21-16) was named honorable mention All-County in foil, as was senior Molly Burnett (14-8) in sabre, and Clifford (19-18) and Conte (18-17) in epee.

The Huntington community has taken pride in the school’s fencing and with many good young athletes in the program, there are high hopes for future success.
