Winter Season Athletic Participation Strong at Finley

There are 98 students participating in the second winter athletic season at J. Taylor Finley Middle School this year, including 48 athletes on the wrestling team.

A report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy indicates there are 64 participants on the two Winter II boys’ teams and 34 members of the two girls’ teams.

There are two separate winter seasons on the middle school level, generally referred to as “early” and “late.”  Thus, middle school students have the opportunity to participate on four different teams during the school year, providing them with a chance to try many different sports.

The seventh grade girls’ basketball team had 48 students try-out and 17 make the squad.  The eighth grade team in the same sport had 30 athletes show up for try-outs and 17 selected for the final roster.

In addition to wrestling, 20 boys tried out for a combination seventh and eighth grade volleyball team and 16 made that squad.

Tryouts for the spring season at Finley will get underway on Monday, March 31. For more information contact the athletic office at 673-2018.
