Tonight’s the Night
The Huntington girls’ basketball team will attempt to reach the state Final Four when it battles Floral Park tonight for the Long Island Class A crown at Stony Brook University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
The Blue Devils advanced to the LI championship game by toppling John Glenn last week for the Suffolk crown, 47-46. Floral Park used a 22-12 fourth quarter run to nip Westbury 44-43 for the Nassau championship.
Huntington enters the game ranked fifth in the New York State Sportswriters Association Class A rankings. (Floral Park is ranked third.) It is believed that no Blue Devil girls’ basketball team has ever been ranked higher.
Huntington will rely on the play of its starting five, Kerry Hicks, Casey Scully, Julie Forster, Maria Marascia and Matte Scully to carry the school to its first LI girls’ basketball title ever. Jane Mitchell, Caitlin Ortiz and Meredith McCourt are expected to be the first three off the bench when head coach Brad Reminick decides to give his starters a breather.
Tickets are available at the gate for $7.
