Huntington Still Savoring Victory
As the Huntington girls’ basketball team makes final preparations to play for the Long Island championship Friday night at Stony Brook University, the Blue Devils are still savoring their victory over John Glenn for the Suffolk Class A title.
The opening minutes of the game didn’t go well for Huntington, which last year got off to a very rough start in the finals against Harborfields, who went on to nip the Blue Devils, 49-48. “We started exactly the way we did last year and exactly how we didn’t want to start this year,” Huntington coach Brad Reminick said. “It didn’t look very good for us in the first couple of minutes or the first half. We really had to figure out what we needed to do defensively and during the half, we basically went back to a hard half court defense.”
Reminick credits that adjustment and his team’s ability to carry it out as a key ingredient in Huntington’s victory over the Knights. “Everyone dropped below the three point line and we made them run their offense without letting their guards penetrate,” he said. “It slowed them down and Julie Forster played like an animal. She kept us in that game and only seemed to get stronger as the game went on. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around we looked at each other and we just seemed to be getting started.”
Huntington’s victory was a real team effort and the players fed off each other. “Maria Marasica was everywhere in the second half,” Reminick said. “Casey (Scully) was, well, Casey. And Kerry (Hicks) and Julie turned into Stockton and Malone with the pick and roll. Matte Scully battled the whole game and Meredith (McCourt), Jane and Caitlin Ortiz gave us valuable minutes.”
The victory over John Glenn marked Huntington’s first county girls’ basketball title ever. “I couldn’t be any happier,” Reminick said after the game. “They (his players) deserve it. We felt like we didn’t play our best last year and we lost. We honestly don’t feel like we played our best tonight and somehow we pulled it off. This was an upset in many people’s minds. During the second half we kept saying to one another, ‘We don’t want this to be the last practice. We have another week left now!”
