Penguins Galore at Washington School
Kids are fascinated with animals and have a particular fancy for penguins. These creatures seem to capture the imaginations of children, who never fail to be intrigued by the species, which has a general lifespan of about 15-20 years, although some are capable of living much longer.
Washington Primary School students spent two weeks studying the 17 different types of penguins that exist. The youngsters learned about the world’s seven continents, various habitats and even the concept of the equator and its practical meaning.
Students discussed what each type of penguin looks like, their similarities and differences and their varied environments. Classes worked in cooperative groups with each focused on a specific penguin. Children researched the particular type assigned to their group and wrote a report about it.
The youngsters also created dioramas, which were later displayed for parents to view during a first grade penguin exhibit at the school. “It was a wonderful learning activity for our first graders and our parents enjoyed it, too,” Washington Principal Marsha Neville said.
