Chinese New Year Celebrated at Jefferson School

Jefferson Primary School students celebrated the Chinese New Year in a variety ways, from a special lunch to reading books and viewing colorful photos.

The youngsters were able to purchase “oriental spaghetti” and a turkey egg roll one day as the cafeteria program joined in the fun.  Students and staff wore red colored clothes to classes, where they participated in lessons about the customs and history surrounding the Chinese New Year.

In teacher Rosa Lanoue’s kindergarten class, children were treated to a special visitor.  Peggy Low, wife of noted author and illustrator William Low and mother of Jefferson students Jennifer and Tim Low, came to read Mr. Low’s book, “Chinatown.”

The book tells the story of a boy and his grandmother enjoying the sights and smells of Chinatown in New York City.  Mrs. Low gave the children red Lai-See envelopes, which is supposed to be “good luck money” wrapped in little red envelopes.   She also gave oranges to the teachers for good health and long life.

Jefferson third graders were in line for a special treat.  Librarian Cindy Tietjen showed each class a PowerPoint presentation of a visit to the International School of Beijing.  Mrs. Tietjen’s daughter and son-in-law teach second grade and art, respectively, at this international school.  The third grade students were amazed at the beautiful pictures of the school and highlights of the country and thrilled to learn about some of the customs and traditions in China.
