Concert has Huntington Intermediate Community Whistling
Music reigned supreme at Huntington Intermediate School’s spring concert series, which was presented to a pair of packed houses. Woodhull Intermediate School students also took the stage in recent weeks and they shined, too.
At Huntington Intermediate, student-musicians put on a morning concert in the school auditorium for hundreds of classmates and then returned for an evening engagement for parents and relatives in Huntington High School’s larger facility.
Principal Mary Stokkers beamed before the evening show kicked-off, telling the crowd how impressed she is with the talent and dedication displayed by this year’s student-musicians and highlighting just how far the group has come musically over the year.
The orchestra opened the concert with “Stone Mountain Stomp,” which saw performers not only playing their instruments but accenting the selection with rousing stomping and clapping throughout the piece. The orchestra closed out its program with a moving performance of “Pirates of the Carribean at World’s End.”
Joan Fretz, Huntington’s director of fine and performing arts, was awed by the orchestra’s performance, telling the crowd it was a remarkable display for young students.
When it was their turn, band members also sparkled, with flute soloists opening with the piece, “Of Gentle Spirit.” A variety of instrumental soloists were flawless during “Dancin’ on the Bayou.”
The advanced chorus took the stage last, singing four different selections and concluding with “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” a popular song from the movie “Hairspray.”
After each of the respective groups finished its performance, members presented flowers to their directors, Chelsea Jablon, Christina Bhasin and Sarah Winters, and thanked them and teacher Debbie Kim, for their help and guidance throughout the year. The directors responded by praising students and noting “their wonderful talent and dedication to their music,” adding the sixth graders will be sorely missed next year as those musicians head to J. Taylor Finley Middle School.
