Welcome Sign a Gift of Huntington Class of 2008
After four years of fundraisers, Huntington High School’s Class of 2008 was able to throw itself a wonderful prom and have enough money left over to present a handsome gift to the school, too. A stunning blue-and-white welcome sign has been erected near the front of the building at the south end of the main sidewalk.
Class of 2008 members held bake sales, sold candy-grams and sponsored a cookie fundraiser. “The cookie fundraiser alone netted us $4,000,” noted Amy Smith, class advisor. “The majority of our funds went towards running an amazing 2007 prom at the Watermill. The sign cost us $1,800 and the garden under the sign will cost approximately $500.”
District workers will construct a brick planter at the base of the sign and fill it with perennials. “The sign replaces another one that rotted away,” said Paul Rispoli, director of facilities. “The new sign should last for many, many years to come.” Ms. Smith is hopeful the brick planter and perennials will be in place by June 27 when graduation ceremonies are held.
The new sign was purchased from Sign-A-Rama, a Huntington-based company that also provided installation. “The students and I looked into different varieties of signs before we decided on this company and sign,” Ms. Smith said. “Once we chose the company, we submitted ideas to them of what we wanted and they sent us back a blueprint of the proposed sign. From time of decision to the time of installation took approximately six weeks. We are very proud of the results.”
With the funds it raised, the Class of 2008 also provided free class t-shirts to about 45 seniors who participated in this year’s Playfest competition. “We are also going to contribute to the Pathway to Excellence brick project and have a brick inscribed for the Class of 2008,” Ms. Smith said.
