Report Card Changes Coming for Elementary PE

Physical Education ClassWhen elementary report cards are issued in the fall, Huntington School District parents will notice changes in how students are assessed in physical education class. School Board members approved a recommendation from the district’s Education Development Committee for revisions that are designed to better align Huntington’s format to state and national standards.

“The inclusion of a behavioral category was deemed appropriate, both by the Subject Matter Council and the EDC, especially since 50 percent of what is taught is related to character education,” said former Assistant Superintendent Michael O’Brien last month. “The PE department also devised a rubric to assess all three areas in place of simply recording an overall grade.”

The assessment will include an evaluation of how well each student demonstrates 1) performance skills in varied PE activities; 2) understanding of game rules, strategies and safety and; 3) appropriate behavior and positive attitude. Thus, teachers will be able to evaluate physical, cognitive and affective areas. “This tells a more detailed story to the parents,” states an EDC document.

Students will be given a numbered grade ranging from 1 (lowest) to 4 (highest) in each of the three categories. The new format will eliminate both a grade for effort and an overall grade. “The PE teacher will spend less time trying to explain the grade to parents,” according the EDC. “It is concrete.”

Signing off on the EDC recommendation were committee members Georgia McCarthy, Michelle Marino, Patricia Ann Persichilli and Mr. O’Brien. The new format will apply to report cards issued to all K-6 students.
