Signorelli Earns Suffolk Crossing Guard Award
Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer presented Washington Primary School teacher aide Pamela Signorelli with the School Crossing Guard of the Year Award for the Second Precinct during a ceremony as police headquarters in Yaphank.
“I am really honored to receive the award,” Mrs. Signorelli said. “It’s a great job and I take the safety of the children very, very seriously. It’s a lot of fun, too. I have met many nice people.”
Mrs. Signorelli began working as a crossing guard in September 1993. At that time she was stationed near St. Patrick’s School on Main Street in Huntington. Since then she has crossed students at Southdown, Jefferson and Huntington Intermediate Schools and, for the past eight years, at J. Taylor Finley Middle School on Greenlawn Road.
This marked the first time Suffolk Police honored school crossing guards. Supervisors considered a number of factors, including letters from parents on the guard’s professional conduct and the example they set each day for students. Mrs. Signorelli also volunteers to work a six-week summer school session and handles Huntington area parades, too.
“I can always count on Pam for assistance when the need arises,” wrote crossing guard supervisor Diane Stagg in a memo to Police Inspector Joseph Blaettler recommending Mrs. Signorelli for the award. “She is very reliable, having not used even a single day throughout the entire school year. Not only is Pam always there for me and for our community to ensure the safety of our children, she always does so in such a professional way with a smile and a good word for everyone. She is a pleasure to work with.”
