Science Trilogy Night Promises Competition and Fun
Although winter has now turned frigid, this year’s Science Trilogy Night at Huntington High School is expected to once again draw a large crowd. The annual event has become one of the most popular winter academic showcases and students are anxious to share their excitement and fun as they test their bridge building skills, meet the Rube Goldberg challenge and present an array of projects.
Community members are invited to attend the event, which will be held Wednesday, February 13 in the high school senior cafeteria from 6:45 - 9 p.m. The evening will also feature the 1st Annual Marshmallow Catapult.
“The Honors Physics students have a choice of either building a bridge, or working on a team to build a marshmallow catapult,” said Kenneth Graham, director of science. “The marshmallow catapult is a competition in which the students have been given specs for building a catapult. They will launch a marshmallow at a target with point values on it. Each team will have three throws of which the best two will be scored. There will be awards for the top three teams as far as point total.”
In the bridge building competition, a machine will test bridges for structural efficiency. Students will also be put to the test in the Rube Goldberg challenge, which involves energy transfer machines aiming to deliver a golf ball through a series of timed actions, finishing the task within 60 seconds. Many of the night’s projects will later be entered in competitions across Long Island.
“There will be a science research gallery walk in which students will present their preliminary findings to their research projects,” Mr. Graham said. A transition class will also be on the scene with a group project of its own. So much will be going on throughout the evening that the event has really outgrown use of the word “trilogy” to describe the event.
“Students are always proud to show off their work,” Superintendent John J. Finello said. Refreshments will be served. For more information call Mr. Graham at 673-2078 or e-mail him at kgraham@hufsd.edu.
