Huntington Partners up for Harvard Pre-Calculus Course
Huntington School Board members have given the green light to an innovative program that will result in a partnership between the high school and Nassau Community College, allowing students to earn four college credits if the complete the Harvard Pre-Calculus course.
The new course will be offered to Huntington students next September. “Parents will be responsible for paying the registration fee as well as the tuition, which is offered at one-third the cost to others (or $50 per credit),” Assistant Superintendent Michael O’Brien said. The district will pick up the tab for textbooks at an estimated cost of $7,000 for the three anticipated class sections.
“The mission of the NCC Partnership Program in Mathematics is to provide a rich mathematical experience for high school students,” according to a new course proposal document submitted to school trustees prior to their vote. “The program strives to foster the understanding of mathematics and its role in a technological society.”
Huntington students will be eligible to receive college credit for finite mathematics, pre-calculus or calculus without ever leaving the high school or disrupting their regular schedule of classes. Trustees were told that these dual enrollment credits are transferable to over 99 percent of colleges in the country. More than 3,000 students have previously participated in the program.
The new course will replace Huntington’s current pre-calculus course. Students will not be required to take the new course for college credit. No additional staff will be required. However, participating teachers will be required to complete a one week workshop at Nassau Community College this summer. “During the first two years of participation, all participating teachers are required to attend user groups that meet approximately four times per year at NCC,” according to the new course proposal.
Students interested in enrolling must meet the course prerequisites of a 75 average in three prior years of high school level math courses, including trigonometry. Students will earn one high school and four college credits (if they choose that option) upon completion of the course.
