Kerry Hicks Reaches 1,000 Career Points
Kerry Hicks made history last Friday night as the Huntington junior scored her 1,000th career point with a first half offensive display that left many in the crowd awestruck.
The 5’7 Hicks, an All-State guard on the Blue Devil girls’ basketball team, scored 27 points in the first 16 minutes of the game to pace Huntington to a 67-38 victory over Eastport-South Manor in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.
"I'm very excited I was able to achieve this goal, especially at a home game where I was surrounded by my family and friends,” Hicks said. “I owe all my thanks to my coaches and teammates. This demonstrates the team unity that we have. We want to see each other succeed and reach our goals. It has been a strong season so far and the team is looking forward to continued success."
Called the “floor general” by Blue Devil head coach Brad Reminick, Hicks has led Huntington in scoring every year since she debuted on the varsity as eighth grader. Reminick said that Hicks is surprisingly quick, a great leader and “has the ability to create something when nothing is there.”
As is traditional, the game was stopped when Hicks reached the scoring milestone and an announcement was made while she received congratulations from her teammates, coaches and fans. At the end of the game, Reminick and Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy presented her with the game ball.
“I am so proud of her and how she went out and did it,” Reminick said. “To get 27 in the first half is pretty cool and tough to do. Her teammates did an outstanding job giving her the ball.”
Hicks ended the evening with 1,001 career points. She’s happy the long prelude to the scoring mark is finally over. The team is marching toward what it hopes is another appearance in the Suffolk Class A final.
After one quarter of play last Friday night, Hicks already had 13 points. “I think we all kind of said she should go after it. She didn’t miss a shot the entire game from the floor. It was great to see her accomplish this feat at home. She is a class act and as a coach you dream to be able to coach an athlete like Kerry.”
Huntington led ESM 26-14 after one quarter and was ahead 51-23 at halftime. Ten Blue Devil players scored in the game. Maria Marascia (11 points) and Julie Forster (eight points) combined for 19 points to supplement the show put on by Hicks.
