Huntington Residents Eligible to Vote in BOCES Referendum

Huntington School District residents are eligible to vote in a Tues. Jan. 29th Western Suffolk BOCES referendum on spending $3.35 million to erect a new office complex addition at its administrative headquarters in Dix Hills. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Last year voters of the 18 component districts spread across Huntington, Babylon and Smithtown that comprise Western Suffolk BOCES rejected a proposal that was both more extensive and expensive. Following that failed initiative, BOCES officials reviewed available options and chose to scale back the original plan, eliminating basement and storage space and redesigning other elements. The new proposal is for a 10,500 square foot one story addition. The new space would replace deteriorating 36-year old modular units.

Western Suffolk BOCES said it will use existing funds that are currently in its capital reserve fund to pay for the project. These are monies that have previously been contributed by component districts. Since funds already exist, no money will need to be borrowed, no interest will be incurred and districts will not be assessed new fees.

Voters can cast ballots at one of three sites: Wilson Tech’s Manor Plains Campus (200 Little Plains Road, Huntington, 11743), Wilson Tech’s Central Campus (17 Westminster Ave., Dix Hills, 11746) or Brennan Middle School (550 Mount Avenue, North Babylon, 11704).

To cast a ballot, a voter must be a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years of age and a resident of one of the 18 component districts for at least 30 days (Huntington is one of these). Prior registration is not required.
