Blood Drive Seeks Support from Staff and Community

They want your blood. The Huntington School District is holding its annual blood drive on Friday, February 1 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Huntington Intermediate School gym on Lowndes Avenue. With demand for blood and related products at a peak, staff members and community residents are being urged to participate.

The timing of the blood drive is crucial according to Vicki Mingin, Huntington’s executive director of special education and student support services, who is helping to coordinate the event. “Having sufficient blood supply available can only happen with continued blood drives such as the one our district is holding,” Dr. Mingin said.

Long Island Blood Services is staffing the blood drive, which extended its hours far beyond the end of the normal school day in the hope of giving dozens of additional opportunities to those willing to donate. According to organizers, many people don’t realize that one pint of blood can assist up to six other individuals in need.

As an additional incentive this year, each donor will receive a complimentary pair of tickets to the Bronx Zoo from Long Island Blood Services. “By giving blood, you are doing something that will help other people, and at the same time feel good about yourself,” Dr. Mingin said.

Those donating blood must bring a photo ID along with their Social Security number. To schedule a specific appointment time call Huntington Intermediate School nurse Elizabeth Scannello at 673-2136. Specific appointments help eliminate long waits. Donors must weigh at least 110 lbs. and between 18-75 years of age.

Questions regarding medical eligibility for blood donations should be directed to Scott Gernhardt of Long Island Blood Services at 1-516-478-5015 or Ms. Scannello.
