Huntington School Briefs


Huntington School District officials have inquired about the white house for sale on the corner of Oakwood Road and Holdsworth Drive near the corner of the Huntington High School property. The property is .4 acres and is priced at $599,000.

The Flower Hill, Washington and Huntington Intermediate School PTA organizations will present “A Taste of Huntington” on Thursday, March 6 at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #318 located at 631 Pulaski Road in Greenlawn.

 

The event is being billed as a “fabulous night of raffles, prizes, music and delicious food from our great local restaurants,” according to promotional material. Proceeds will benefit PTA programs in each of the three schools. More information will be announced soon.

The Huntington Highsteppers, the high school’s competitive dance team, placed in all categories to capture a pair of third place trophies in kick and pom and a second place award in dance during a recent event featuring numerous Long Island high schools.

Nine Spirit Days are planned in upcoming weeks at Huntington Intermediate School. Themes for the days include pajamas, crazy hats, crazy hair, mix-match, sports, twins and silly socks. Husky Day is set for March 14, the last day in March Madness week at the school.

Huntington High School’s Holocaust in Literature course is recommended for all juniors and seniors. It’s a one semester, half-credit course that provides “a multi-disciplinary study of the Holocaust as it relates to racism and prejudice,” according to the course bulletin. “Through the use of literature and historical documents, students will be able to comprehend the ramifications of this event as it impacts on the present and future. A term paper and a project are required.”

Huntington School Board members approved Jon Rothfeld to work as a per diem substitute administrator in the district. He earned a Bachelor’s degree at Hofstra University in 1967 in political science and a Master’s at Adelphi University in 1970 in elementary education. He obtained his administrative certification at St. John’s University in 1973.

 

Mr. Rothfeld is a retired Lindenhurst school district elementary principal, a position he held from 1988 through the 2005 school year. He has also worked in New York City’s District 19 as a third and fourth grade remedial math teacher (1967-79), central office math staff developer/trainer (1979-84) and assistant principal at P.S. 149 (1984-88).

 

Mr. Rothfeld will be paid $350 per day on an as-needed basis, as are other substitute administrators in the district.

Huntington Intermediate School’s Parent University will hold a session on Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m. All parents are invited to a presentation by Assistant Superintendent Michael O’Brien centering on English Language Assessment state tests and how to interpret the district’s results. The workshop, sponsored by the school’s shared decision making team, will be held in the auditorium.
