Blue Devil Sports Briefs

The Huntington fencing program will hold its annual invitational tournament this Saturday (Jan. 26) in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the day.

Anthony Brown’s three-point basket at the buzzer helped the Blue Devil boys’ basketball team nip Sayville in double overtime, 59-58. Brown scored a game-high 26 points and Alex Brown added 15 more to pace Huntington, which outscored the Golden Flashes in the first quarter, 15-2.

The hard fought game saw dramatic swings in momentum. Huntington led 27-18 at halftime and 40-32 after three quarters, before Sayville mounted a rally to send the game into overtime. The teams stayed even right to the bitter end before Brown’s heroics prevailed.

The Blue Devils connected for six three-pointers in the game. Ted Calligeros chipped in with 11 points.

The Huntington wrestling coasted past Central Islip, 53-12 in a non-league dual meet before a crowd of about 250 in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. The only upset took place when Blue Devil heavyweight Dashaun Thomas dropped a 5-4 decision.

Thomas was taken down early and fought back the rest of the match. Trailing 5-3 late in the third period, a stalling call cut the senior’s deficit to one point but despite trying for a last second takedown, he went down to defeat.

Kerry Hicks scored 15 points to help the Huntington girls’ basketball team turn back Sayville, 51-18. The Blue Devils jumped out to a 22-4 lead after two quarters of play in a game that saw nine Huntington players score. Julie Forster (10 points) and Maria Marascia (nine points) were also productive offensively. Hicks, who contributed four assists, and Caitlin Ortiz each connected for a pair of three-pointers. Casey Scully and Marascia also scored from downtown. Forster added a dozen rebounds.

The Huntington boys’ basketball team couldn’t overcome an eight point first quarter deficit as the Blue Devils dropped a home game to Rocky Point, 52-48. The Eagles jumped out to an early 14-6 lead and despite being outscored 28-24 in the second half, held on for the victory.

Ted Calligeros led Huntington with 18 points and Anthony Brown added eight more. Calligeros and Alex Brown each pumped in a three-point basket, respectively.

The Huntington wrestling team defeated East Hampton, 72 to -1 in a league dual meet last Friday night. The unusual final score was the result of the Bonackers losing a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct.

Louis Puca, Jayson Santiago, Chris Sandoval and Anthony Lupi contributed pins to the winning effort. East Hampton forfeited six weight classes, handing the Blue Devils 36 points before the meet began.

A fast start by the Huntington girls’ basketball team helped propel the Blue Devils past Rocky Point, 51-18. Kerry Hicks led Huntington with 16 points, as she moved closer to the coveted 1,000 point club. Julie Forster added nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Blue Devils opened a 14-2 lead after eight minutes of play and went ahead 34-4 by halftime. Eight Huntington players scored in the game, including Casey Scully who pumped in eight points and added six steals and Maria Marascia who contributed five points, including a three-pointer. Caitlin Ortiz and Liz Northcote each had four points, respectively.

The Huntington wrestling team looked impressive in soundly defeating Nanuet (59-9) and Mahopac (63-0) last weekend in a double dual held at J. Taylor Finley Middle School because the high school gym was unavailable.

Against Nanuet, the Blue Devils picked up eight pins. Chris Sandoval’s 7-5 decision at 189 lbs. was probably the most exciting match of the meet. “Chris did a great job wrestling for the entire six minutes,” head coach Lou Giani said.

Against Mahopac, senior Jose Vasquez (112 lbs.) picked up the day’s fastest pin when he flattened his opponent in 27 seconds. In two closely fought bouts, Omar Santiago pulled out a 4-2 decision at 130 lbs. and Duncan Murchison won 6-4 at 171 lbs.

The event was scheduled for the Finley gym because hundreds of desks have been set up at the high school in preparation for this week’s Regents exams.
