Huntington’s State Social Studies Scores Rise

Huntington School District fifth graders achieved strong results on last November’s New York State social studies exam compared to 2006 scores. More than 87 percent of students met state proficiency levels, a marked improved over last year.

Of the 333 students taking the exam, 42.04 scored on Level 4, signifying they are above proficiency and another 45.35 percent landed at Level 3, signaling they are proficient in the material. Twenty students or 6.01 percent of test takers partially met proficiency, scoring on Level 2 and 6.61 percent are below proficiency.

Last year, 14.65 percent of the 314 students who took the exam failed to meet proficiency another 8.6 percent only partially met state requirements. Assistant Superintendent Michael O’Brien called the new results “remarkably improved” and presented a detailed breakdown of scores for Huntington School Board members.

At Huntington Intermediate School, 87.5 percent of the students who took the exam scored at or above proficiency levels. At Woodhull Intermediate School, 87.19 percent fifth graders reached either Level 3 or 4, including 45.73 percent on the highest level.

Failing to meet proficiency were 5.36 percent of Huntington Intermediate fifth graders and 7.93 percent of their Woodhull Intermediate counterparts.

“We won’t rest until all students are at or above proficiency,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.
