Blue Devil Fencers take Mid-Season Assessment

The Blue Devil girls’ fencing team is off to a strong start, compiling a 5-2 record at the mid-point of the season.  The year has been highlighted by wins over perennial Suffolk power Centereach and cross-town rival Walt Whitman

The Blue Devil girls’ squad is led by seniors Kaari Casey (17-2 record) and Nicole Palmer (12-7), who are both starring in foil.  Among the epee contingent, freshman Olivia Weller (13-3) sophomore Johanna Clifford (11-6) and junior Sarah Conte (10-9) have turned in fine performances. Senior Molly Burnett is tops in sabre at 7-2 and sophomore Kieren Fell is 8-8.

Huntington’s boys’ fencing team is 2-5 at the midpoint of the season, after suffering three tough one-point losses.  The squad is led by senior Kevin Thompson (15-4) and junior Vernon O’Garra (13-1) in epee.  Senior Jake Zimmerman heads the sabre squad with a 13-7 mark and sophomore Ian Coneys has won six matches.  Junior Dylan Payne and senior Greg James have won 10 and eight matches, respectively, in foil competition.

Both Blue Devil teams are coached by Mike Fabio, a former Huntington star who is in his first year as the program’s head coach.
