Sports Participation Remains Strong in Huntington
More than 350 students at J. Taylor Finley Middle School and Huntington High School are participating on one of 19 athletic teams this winter, according to report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy.
There are 35 players on Finley’s two boys’ basketball teams and 39 players on the two girls’ volleyball squads at the school. Another 19 boys are on the swim team and 22 girls are cheerleaders this winter.
Finley participation is almost evenly split during the first of two winter seasons, with 61 girls and 54 boys on rosters for a total participation of 115 students.
At the high school level, 243 students are split among 13 winter teams. Boys’ and girls’ fencing have 34 and 30 members, respectively and there are 33 varsity and junior varsity wrestlers, a dozen varsity and 10 JV cheerleaders, 24 boys’ swimmers, a dozen boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball players, respectively, 16 JV boys’ basketball players, a dozen JV girls’ basketball players, 27 members of the boys’ winter track team and 21 girls’ winter track team members.
A participation report detailing the late winter Finley sports season will be released by Mrs. McCarthy sometime in February.
