Three Blue Devil Fencers Qualify for Junior Olympics


Not that it needed to, but the Huntington High School fencing program added some polish to its image when three Blue Devils qualified for the Junior Olympics following strong performances in tournaments sponsored by the U.S. Fencing Association. 

 

Blue Devil coach Mike Fabio welcomed the strong performances.  The Junior Olympic qualifiers included senior Kevin Thompson finished sixth in Junior (under 20 years old) Men’s Epee.  Sophomore Johanna T. Clifford came in fifth in Junior Women’s Epee and freshman Olivia Weller was third in Cadet (under 17 years old) Women’s Epee. Clifford also automatically qualified for Cadet Women’s Epee.

 

Nine other Blue Devil fencers also competed in the qualifying tournaments including seniors Kaari Casey and Nicole Palmer in Junior Women’s Foil, junior Vernon O’Garra in Junior Men’s Epee, senior Jake Zimmerman in Junior Men's Sabre, sophomore Ian Coneys and junior Michael McCourt in Junior Men’s Sabre and Cadet Men’s Sabre, junior Dylan Payne in Junior Men’s Foil, and eighth-graders Nicholas Maiarelli and Robert Folan in Junior Men's Foil and Cadet Men's Foil.

 

Casey and Palmer each earned E2008 classifications under the USFA rating system by finishing ninth and 12th, respectively, in their tournament. 
This year’s Junior Olympics are slated for Feb. 15-18 in Charlotte, N.C.
