Huntington Math Honor Society Inducts 24 New Members

It was a festive occasion as two dozen Huntington High School students were inducted into Mu Alpha Theta, the national math honor society.  The traditional ceremony attracted a crowd of proud family members and friends who offered warm applause throughout the program.

The new members include sophomore Everett Coraor, juniors Ye Ji Cho, Daniel Akerley, Matthew Bishop, Fiona Byrne, Stephanie Chang, Michael Corcoran, Kevin Corcoran, Thomas Curley, Nicholas D’Esposito, Julia Forster, Kelsey Kunes, Marco Lagone, Alexander Lau, Christopher Lau, Ryan Loscalzo, Kristy Lyons, Kristen Reardon, Andrew Reiver, Brian Ruggiero, Kathryn Schmitz, Steven Secular, Natasha Thalla and senior David Acton.

“This is a wonderful achievement for these students and the result of their hard work and sustained effort,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said.  “It is always exciting to recognize young people for a job well done.”

Huntington’s math honor society is led by faculty advisor Doris Quintilian and student officers Madeleine Jensen (president), Nicole Palmer (vice president), Dylan Payne (secretary) and Laurie Beth Widerman (treasurer).  This year’s event marked the 11th such induction since the local chapter of the society was founded.

Math Director O. Wayne Edwards beamed throughout the evening.  In addition to the officers and new inductees, current members include Max Cohen Jonathan Correll, Shannon Lee Connors, Laura Dabrowski, Luke Forster, Venice Lagone, Zachary Lustberg, Erica Norton, Leslie O’Brien, Tim O’Grady, Anthony Priolo and Victoria Smith.

To qualify for membership, students must have successfully completed Math B, have an overall un-weighted average of 90 or better in previous high school math courses and have a current un-weighted average of 85 or better in the math course they are taking this year.
