Blue Devil Sports Briefs
Dick Hogan has been named Suffolk League V Junior Varsity Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year for his work with the Huntington High School JV team. Hogan guided the squad to a 9-2 league mark (9-5 overall) as the Blue Devils went 9-1 in their final 10 games. Huntington outscored its opponents, 39-18, including three shutouts.
“Dick really deserved this honor,” Blue Devil varsity head coach John Walsh said. “His team had a very nice year.”
Alan Kuver was appointed to the newly created position of assistant varsity fencing coach at Huntington high School. Mr. Kuver, a technology teacher, has a long history with the fencing program, serving as head coach for many years.
The New York State Sportswriters’ Association (www.newyorksportswriters.org) still hasn’t seen fit to rank the Huntington wrestling team among the top 30 squads in the state despite the fact the Blue Devils finished only five point behind fifth ranked Chenango Forks and two points behind Waverly, the state’s second ranked small school, in the Windsor tournament. The Blue Devils also easily outdistanced fields in tournaments at Huntington, Port Jervis and Suffern high schools this winter.
The Huntington girls’ fencing team defeated cross town rival Walt Whitman in an exciting match, 14-13. Huntington’s Nicole Palmer and Kaari Casey both went 3-0 on the afternoon and Sarah Conte finished 2-1 in her three bouts.
The Huntington boys’ basketball team easily moved past Comsewogue in a League V battle, 67-44. The Blue Devils were led by Alex Brown’s 19 points. Peter Delfino (12 points), Mike Faulter (10) and Ted Calligeros (10) also reached double figures.
Huntington jumped out to a 21-14 first quarter lead and held a 40-25 advantage at halftime. The Blue Devils continued on their roll in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 15-10 to go up by a score of 55-35.
Calligeros led Huntington with nine rebounds. Anthony Brown (9) and Matt Duffy (7) combined for 16 more points for the Blue Devils.
Kerry Hicks was on fire early, and so were her teammates, as the Huntington girls’ basketball team grabbed a 27-6 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 55-33 victory over league foe Comsewogue.
Hicks scored a game high 22 points, including nailing four three-pointers. Teammate Julie Forster had another productive game, with 16 points and strong inside play and Casey Scully added eight points. Huntington was ahead at halftime, 34-14. The win kept the Blue Devils perfect in league play.
Huntington wrestler Morris Romero came-from-behind to win a 6-5 referee’s criteria decision in overtime, to start a string of five consecutive victories, including four straight pins as the Blue Devils toppled Harborfields, 42-19 before a crowd of about 300 in the Tornadoes’ gym.
Until Romero’s heroics, Huntington found itself in a close fight with improved Harborfields. Following the senior’s victory at 189 lbs., Dashaun Thomas (215), Nigel McNeil (103), Jose Vasquez (112) and Francisco Pereira (119) all picked up pins.
Huntington freshman Lou Puca earned a technical fall at 140 lbs. and Omar Santiago (130), Jayson Santiago and Anthony Lupi all grabbed decisions.
The Huntington boys’ basketball team played a fine first quarter against East Hampton, building a 21-17 lead, but struggled the rest of the way as the Blue Devils dropped a League V contest, 72-60, despite 17 points from Ted Calligeros.
Huntington’s lead was erased when East Hampton went on a 24-13 second quarter run. The Blue Devils managed to reduce the deficit to a handful of points on several occasions, but were never able to pull even or go ahead.
Matt Duffy added 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers and Alex Brown had nine points. With the win, East Hampton improved to 6-0 in league play and the Blue Devils fell to 2-4.
Julie Forster scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help the Blue Devil girls’ basketball team turn back East Hampton, 57-34. Huntington was in control from the start, scoring 19 of the game’s first 23 points, thanks to its fast paced offense and accurate shooters.
Eight different Blue Devils scored in the game, which saw Caitlin Ortiz connect on three three-pointers. Kerry Hicks moved closer to 1,000 career points, pumping in 13 and Maria Marascia added 11 points. Huntington led 34-14 at halftime and was never seriously threatened after the opening minutes.
The win allowed the Blue Devils to remain perfect in league action with a 6-0 record.
