Speedy Blue Devils Knock Heads with the Best
The Huntington boys’ winter track team is motoring right along. The squad turned in fine performances in a pair of recent meets against some of the East Coast’s best high school athletes at competitions at Fordham University and the famed Armory in Manhattan.
The Blue Devils battled squads from around the metropolitan area and from Virginia, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Upstate New York. Head coach Ron Wilson is pleased with the improvement he has seen since the season got underway in November. “We are really making progress, both as a team and individually,” he said.
At Fordham’s Grinch Games, Huntington’s 4 x 200m relay team of Quillian Respass, David Acton, Jake Gayle and Emmanuel Dume medaled. Gayle also took home second place honors in the 300m sprint with a time of 38.3 seconds.
Freshman Michael Garing turned in a personal best performance, in finishing the one-mile run in 5:35. The effort placed him in the top ten among about 30 ninth graders, Wilson said. Joe Brown also notched a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 35 feet, putting him among the top juniors at the event.
At the Marine Corps Relay Classic at the Armory, the Blue Devils looked strong again. Juniors Josh Daves (20’8) and Jake Gayle (18’11) finished second in the long jump with a combined distance of 39’7 and the 4 x 200m relay team placed among the top 15 entries with a time of 1:41. The Blue Devils seemed destined for a much higher finish but the anchor was tripped up on the last curve.
Wilson hopes to see continued improvement right through to the end of the regular season and then peak the team for the post-season.
