Blue Devil Sports Briefs

The Huntington wrestling team easily moved past Eastport-South Manor last Friday afternoon, 67-9 as the Blue Devils won 12 of 14 weight classes before a crowd of about 200 in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

ESM handed Huntington 24 points when the Sharks forfeited at 103, 140, 171 and 215 lbs.  Damon McQueen (96 lbs.), Maurice Loadholt (125), Omar Santiago (130), Ryan Fox (145), Jayson Santiago (152) and Anthony Lupi (160) all won their bouts by pin.  Jose Vasquez (112) won by technical fall and Francisco Pereira (119) grabbed a 12-2 decision.  The dual meet win was the first for the Blue Devils this winter in League V competition.

The victory raised head coach Lou Giani’s career record to 427-36-1.  The Hall of Famer is 224-15 in league meets at Huntington.

The Huntington boys’ basketball team dropped a 60-52 decision to Harborfields, despite 20 points from 5’9 point guard Matt Duffy, who hit a trio of three-pointers.  The Blue Devils led 11-9 after one quarter of play, but a 19-10 second quarter run by the Tornadoes made Huntington play catch-up the rest of the game.

Harborfields led the Blue Devils at halftime, 28-21 and held a 45-35 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.  Huntington cut the gap to single digits but couldn’t get within striking distance.

Anthony Brown added 15 points, including one from downtown.  Peter Delfino and Mike Faulter scored five points each, respectively.

Several Blue Devil wrestlers are listed among Long Island’s best in a ranking released by The Mat Slap, an online publication covering high school and college wrestling.

Huntington’s Damon McQueen (2nd-96 lbs.), Jose Vasquez (1st-103 lbs.), Francisco Pereira (5th-119 lbs.), Dashaun Thomas (5th-215 lbs.) and Nigel McNeil (honorable mention-103 lbs.) are all listed in the rankings.

Islip topped the Huntington boys’ basketball team last Saturday in a League V match-up in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.  Alex Brown led the Blue Devils with 17 points and Ted Calligeros chipped in with another 16.

Islip bolted to an early 16-9 lead and held a 26-18 halftime advantage.  Despite spirited play, Huntington couldn’t make up the deficit, trailing 36-25 after three quarters.  Brown (3) and Calligeros (1) combined for four three-point baskets.
