Summer Science Study Available to Huntington Students

There are numerous opportunities for Huntington School District students to engage in summer science study.  Kenneth Graham, the district’s director of science, regularly scours a variety of resources to gather information about offsite study programs, including summer experiences.

Some of the most recently announced possibilities include a summer science and engineering program for high school girls at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.  It will run fro June 29 to July 26.  For more information see www.smith.edu/summerprograms/ssep.

The Long Island Group Advancing Science Education (LIGASE) offers a summer program at Stony Brook University.  Topics include a biotechnology camp, explorations in forensics and a science exploration camp for middle school age students.  Visit www.stonybrook.edu/ligase for more information.

The Center for Excellence in Education’s Research Science Institute will offer a summer program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for outstanding high school students.  The deadline for applications to this prestigious program is Feb. 8.  Go to www.cee.org for more information.

According to the group’s website, “Each summer approximately 75 high school students gather for six of the most stimulating weeks of their young lives. Selected from the United States and other nations, these students participate in a rigorous academic program which emphasizes advanced theory and research in mathematics, the sciences, and engineering. Students attend college-level classes taught by distinguished professors. Nationally recognized teachers conduct classes designed to sharpen research skills. In addition, students complete hands-on research with top mentors at corporations, universities, and research organizations.”

The 2008 National Youth Science Camp is an “opportunity for graduating seniors who intend to pursue an education and profession oriented toward science, math, engineering or medicine.”  The camp program is located in West Virginia and runs from June 29 to July 26.  It has been nationally renowned since it began in 1963.  The deadline for applications is Feb. 18.
