Huntington Intermediate School Presents a Dazzling Winter Concert
Huntington Intermediate School students brought two different auditoriums to life with a dazzling pair of musical performances that celebrated the holiday season in grand style. The school’s advanced music groups put on display a diverse array of talents, which drew repeated ovations from classmates and family members.
The first of the performances was held in the Huntington Intermediate School auditorium as a general assembly of students were treated to a variety of selections. A second evening performance was staged in the cavernous Huntington High School auditorium for hundreds of family members and friends.
The advanced orchestra, directed by teacher Christina Bhasin, kicked off the show. Students were chosen to introduce each of the three selections. Violinist Erin Plante introduced “Carol of the Bells” and violist Jonathan Hoey did the honors for “Silver Bells.” Cellist Scott Minson provided an introduction for the rousing “Hanukkah Holiday.”
The advanced band under the direction of Chelsea Jablon, played several selections, including “Festival of Lights,” “Anasazi” and a fun rendition of “Christmas in the Kitchen” that featured soloists Megan Boyce, Cynthia Gowani, Sam Kurathowski, Kylie Palmer, Daniel Rose and Lyndsey Williams playing pots and pans as musical instruments.
The concluding segment featured the advanced chorus singing some sentimental favorites. Spurred on by teacher-director Sarah Winters and piano accompanist Martha Garland, the youngsters turned in an impressive performance. Taking on soloist roles during the songs were students Alyson Baker, Brianna Kirkland, Alexandria Mandriota, Stephanie Shea, Ashley Melgar, Travon Seon, Giselle Aparico, Gabriella Mandriota, Sarah Mosden and Monica Owen.
One of the final numbers, “One Candle Lights the Way” was enhanced when the chorus utilized flashlights to project beams of light onto the darkened ceiling. Music faculty members, including teachers Mitch Malle and Deborah Kim were more than pleased with the show and the effort of students and the two audiences that took in the performances seemed to approve, too, as evidenced by their loud applause.
“Each year audiences are amazed at the talents displayed by our music students,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said. “Our community has long valued the district’s music program as well as the importance of music education in the lives of students. We are fortunate to have a hardworking group of teachers that bring out the best in the youngsters entrusted to them.”
