Huntington Foundation Announces Mini-Grant Awards

The Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education has announced its mini-grant awards for the 2007-08 school year.  Approved mini-grant proposals are funded at levels up to $1,000 each.

This year’s approved mini-grants will fund the following initiatives:

Anatomical Studies Grant

The Huntington High School art department will be purchasing a collection of anatomical models to use as a resource for the AP studio art and drawing and painting classes.  This collection will provide the solid foundation needed to launch a successful program focusing on anatomical studies.  With these materials, the art department seeks to entice both art students and students who have an interest in fields such as biology and medical studies.

Jeopardy in the Classroom

Jeopardy is an entertaining way to introduce and motivate children to the concept of study skills.  The game is customized by classroom teachers by creating clues and responses which the children work cooperatively to solve.  Jeopardy can be used with a large variety of curriculum areas such as language arts, social studies, science, math etc.

Viewing Video in Widescreen

The high school video arts program will be receiving a 32" widescreen LCD TV and swing arm wall mount bracket in order to present visually stimulating and inspirational information to the students.  Video students film in a 16 x 9 widescreen format and previously have not been able to view their final projects accurately.  This new equipment will enhance the production of the Huntington High School newscast.

"Noteworthy Carpet" for Jefferson Music Room

This carpet and staff/symbol game accessory pack will be used in the new music room used by 368 students.  This room was carved out of the cafeteria space and is very loud and resonant.  This carpet will improve the acoustics, provide seating (there isn’t any room for chairs) and will also be a visual and tactile tool for students to learn about note placement.

Lumens DC160

This document camera will be a tool to support the standards of all core subjects.  It will be a means of sharing documents and artifacts and be used to support the ELA standards by projecting texts of a variety of genres.  Using the split screen feature, students can compare and contrast texts.  Students will also be able to have an image of their work captured to the camera, which will support the math, science and technology state standards.

Portfolio Development - Equipment for Advanced Computer Graphics

The purchase of a digital camera and printer will allow every student who participates in the advanced computer graphics, computer graphics and advanced photography classes to have an opportunity to effectively control and manipulate their preferred medium. This could create the next generation of graphic illustrators, designers and photographers.

Reading Manipulatives

Reading manipulatives will enhance the instructional program within classrooms. Students will be able to expand and enhance their learning in small, diverse cooperating groups.  Reading manipulatives focus on phonemical awareness, phonics, vocabulary and comprehension.
