School Heritage Museum Hosts National History Day Tuesday Night

It might come as a surprise to many that large numbers of Huntington High School students have a genuine love for history, and the teenagers will put it on display at the school’s National History Day competition and festivities Tuesday night (Jan. 8) at 7 p.m. in the School Heritage Museum.  The public is invited to attend.

Student entries in categories ranging from individual and group documentary and exhibit to group performance and historical paper will be judged based on this year’s national theme, “Conflict and Compromise.”  Participants have spent dozens of hours creating their projects, with most working late into the night and over weekends.

The top finishers in each category will advance to the regional competition, where they will battle with students from other Long Island high schools to qualify for the state finals later this spring.  The national championship will follow.

“We are proud of the students participating, all of whom have put in countless hours of research using primary source information on the chosen topic related to their curriculum” department director Joseph Leavy said.  “All Global History honors students in grades nine and ten submitted entries and the results are a powerful testament to the quality of work their teachers have encouraged them to pursue.”

The Jack Abrams Award for Local History will also be presented Tuesday night.  Mr. Abrams, who retired more than 20 years ago as a district principal, is the School Heritage Museum’s founder and curator.  The award winner(s) will have their name(s) permanently engraved on a plaque that hangs in the school lobby which honors recipients.  Last year’s winners were Laura Dabrowski and Madeline Jensen.

For more information on the evening contact Mr. Leavy at 673-2079 or e-mail him at jleavy@hufsd.edu.
