Holidays Have Flower Hill Students Hopping

The Flower Hill Primary School gymnasium was rocking during the annual Holiday Hop, organized by physical education teachers Nancy Conlon and Lou Giani and music teacher Karen Cronin.

The interdisciplinary activity was the culmination of units in dance and fundamental music concepts.  For three weeks students worked on various listening skills, movement directionality (left, right, front, back), music reading and steady beat, all while learning a variety of dances and songs.

Parents and family members were invited to Flower Hill to join classes for an hour of heart healthy fun and music as the school gym morphed into a giant dance hall.  Many youngsters dressed in festive outfits, with colorful holiday hats and related attire.  Each of the four grade levels were assigned a block of time and came wearing either green shirts (kindergarten), red shirts (first grade), white shirts (second grade) or winter scarves and hats (third grade).

Students in each respective grade began their session with a touching musical performance.  Following each show, the youngsters descended the chorus risers and parents poured out onto the floor to join in the dance fun.  Among the dances was the Bunny Hop, Hokey Pokey, Cotton Eye Joe, The Train, Hands Up, The Chicken Dance (which featured an appearance by Flower Hill’s Big Chicken) and many more.

Some students said they never realized dancing can be so much fun.
