Trustees Consider Increase in Piano Accompanist Pay Rate
Huntington School Board members are considering an increase in the hourly rate of pay for piano accompanists who work with teachers and students during rehearsals and performances. If enacted, the rate would go from $21 to $24 per hour.
Funds to cover the increases were included in this year’s school budget, but the increase in the hourly rate requires a separate vote by trustees.
“The rationale that I provided during the budget development was that our piano accompanists had not had a raise in the hourly rate for three years,” said Joan R. Fretz, director of fine and performing arts. “The current rate of $21 is too low and we are unable to secure accompanists. Piano accompanists generally make $150-$200 to play a rehearsal and concert. Our accompanists make only $80-$100 for the same work.”
Trustees have been asked to make the increase retroactive to Sept. 2007. The proposal is expected to be an item on the Jan. 7 School Board agenda.
