Huntington Gears Up for English Language Learner Programs
Two programs aimed at English Language Learners are ready to unfold in the Huntington School District. Officials have been shifting through applications from teachers interested in participating in the two initiatives.
ELL students are limited in English proficiency. At Huntington High School, special tutoring sessions will be offered to ELLs. Classes are slated to begin this month and continue through June. The classes will be offered each afternoon during eighth and ninth periods. “The students will receive reading and writing instruction according to their English level following ESL (English as a Second Language) methodology,” according to a district job posting.
The high school program is funded by a Title III grant. Tutors must be certified in ESL and have taken at least 30 credits in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). Teachers will be paid $30 for each period they teach.
The district is also seeking eight teachers to work in the K-1 Saturday Academy, which is aimed at kindergarten and first grade ELL students attending Southdown, Flower Hill, Jefferson and Washington primary schools. “The goal is to teach the ELL students pre-literacy skills through ESL methodology,” according to the job posting. A Title III grant will also fund this program.
Classes will begin on Jan. 26 and run through June 21 and last for two hours (9:30 – 11:30 a.m.). Teachers will participate in a two-hour training session prior to the program’s kick-off. Teachers must be state certified with ESL certification preferred. Teachers will be compensated at the rate of $45.77 per hour.
The location for the Saturday Academy program has not yet been announced.
