Washington Science Fair Spurs Interest and Ingenuity

Dozens of parents and grandparents turned out for Washington Primary School’s annual third grade science fair and students put on quite a show.  From the moment the youngsters carried projects through the school doors in the morning, it was a day filled with energy and excitement as classrooms took on the appearance of full fledged labs.

The fair is an annual event at the school and even after all these years, enthusiasm for it is still running high. Teachers provide students with a list of simple scientific experiments from which the youngsters select one for their project.  The experiment is then performed in front of classmates and family members.

“It’s always wonderful and it went really well this year,” third grade teacher Susan Turner said.  “The students had lots of fun and parents and grandparents enjoyed it, too.”

The fair saw students in the four third grade classes conduct experiments, carry out related activities and make presentations for classmates and visitors. Principal Marsha Neville said she thought the initiative was a very worthwhile educational experience.  “It’s a great learning tool,” she said.

Students glowed with pride as they showed off their creations and conducted their planned experiments.  “They were extremely enthusiastic and everyone did a real nice job,” Ms. Turner said.  In addition to Ms. Turner’s class, students in Deborah Quiles, Katie Dresch and Joanne Tures’ classes also prepared projects and conducted individual experiments.

“Some of the projects were just fabulous and all of them were done well,” Ms. Tures said.  “The science fair is always very popular and this year the kids had a blast with it.”
