Fencing Roster Swelling so a New Coaching Position is Considered
With interest in the Huntington High School fencing program running at an all-time high, school officials are considering adding a third coach to work with athletes for the remainder of the season. The proposal is expected to be on the Jan. 7 School Board agenda.
In seeking the additional position, Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy pointed to a roster of 67 participants, including 36 boys and 31 girls. “It has become increasingly difficult to supervise and instruct this number of participants effectively,” she said. Mrs. McCarthy and the current coaches want to avoid having to “cut” athletes from what has become a popular sport.
“If we want to be competitive in this sport, we need to add an additional coach to this program in order for our students to get proper instruction,” Mrs. McCarthy said. If trustees agree and the new post is created, one coach will be assigned to the boys’ squad, a second to the girls’ on the team and a third to instruct novices.
“I feel this coaching position will have a positive impact on the program,” Mrs. McCarthy said. Funding for the new position will come from an unused cheerleading stipend and from savings realized as a result of a veteran coach leaving his position and being replaced by a lower paid rookie.
