Blue Devil Girls End Struggle with 14-0 Run
Smithtown East took it to the Huntington girls’ basketball team early before the Blue Devils went on a 14-0 second half run en route to a 59-44 victory in the Suffolk Shootout at Northport.
Huntington was slow out of the gate, turning the ball over, missing shots, and struggling to keep up with Smithtown East during much of the first half. The Blue Devils trailed at halftime, 28-22. Then, all of a sudden, the momentum swung and it was a whole new ballgame.
“It was a tale of two games,” head coach Brad Reminick said. “We couldn’t make a shot in the first half and then couldn’t miss in the second.” Huntington started connecting from all over the court, and started playing much better defense, too. The Blue Devils forced numerous turnovers and scored off many of them.
Huntington allowed just 16 points in the entire second half while scoring 37. “Our defense did a great job,” Reminick said. “We found out a little bit about ourselves.”
Casey Scully and Kerry Hicks each scored 15 points, respectively. During stretches of the second half the Blue Devils resembled the poised and confident team that last year went 21-1 and finished second in Suffolk Class A.
Julie Forster also turned in a stellar effort against Smithtown East with 14 points and Maria Marascia played her usual gritty game on defense and contributed eight points on offense. Jane Mitchell came off the bench and scored six points.
Huntington will now head into the heart of its league schedule.
