Blue Devil Girls’ Basketball Reaps Individual Honors

Four Huntington girls’ basketball players have been named to this year’s All-League team.  Senior Casey Scully and juniors Kerry Hicks, Julie Forster and Maria Marascia were all selected for the prestigious honor.  Brad Reminick was recognized a co-Coach of the Year in Suffolk League V.

Each of the Blue Devils will soon learn if they have also earned a spot on the All-County squad.  That announcement will be made at the annual Suffolk girls’ basketball dinner at Villa Lombardi’s on March 17.

Reminick praised his players, and recognized the contributions they have made to the team and program.  “That group as a whole has accomplished so much over the last two years,” he said.  “They have all played important roles rebuilding this program and making it elite. Losing Casey [Scully] will be hard on everyone, especially me because she was our first project.  She was the first one who really bought into what we were trying to do and what team we were going to become. We had to change the mindset; that Huntington basketball wasn't a doormat anymore; that the girls would only be competitive in soccer and lax.  Casey took the bait and ran with it.  She has made everyone better.”

Forster, Hicks and Marascia followed Scully.  Reminick likes to call the three juniors, “the young kids.”  He said that their arrival on the scene, coupled with Scully, allowed Huntington to take “the next step” in the evolution toward a top tier team.  “Over the past four seasons with them on varsity we have gone to the level that this program was at in the early ‘80's and early ‘90's.”

Huntington now has an excellent front line and a deep bench, plus a well-stocked junior varsity.  Interest in the sport is running high in the district.  Reminick gives a lot of the credit to his core four.

“This group has also gone farther then any team in Huntington history and holds the school record for most wins in a season with 21,” said Reminick proudly.  “The program hadn’t made the playoffs for 12 years.  This crew changed everything.  Now we’ve been consistently ranked in the top 20 in the state the past two years. These four can go down as arguably the most talented group to ever play at Huntington.”

Reminick shared the Coach of the Year Award with Russ Tietjen of Harborfields.
