Reading Tradition Continues at Washington School
A 31-year Huntington School District tradition continued this winter at Washington Primary School as the Parents as Reading Partners program saw students and parents setting aside time each day to read.
“We have been honored by New York State for our faithful commitment to this worthy program” Washington School librarian Georganne White said about the district. Ms. White has been involved in PARP at several different schools and is a strong advocate of the program.
“At Washington, our PTA generously supplied weekly motivational prizes such as rulers, pencils, erasers and bookmarks to encourage our students all month,” Ms. White said. Teachers and support staff worked with children to encourage and motivate them to read as much as possible, emphasizing how much fun the activity can be.
An array of parents came to the school each afternoon to read to small groups of youngsters who might not otherwise have had the opportunity to be read to at home that day. “The children loved the individual attention and the parents were all smiles,” Ms. White said.
The parent-student small reading group experience was so successful that a partnership between the school and PTA has developed to try and continue the sessions on a regular basis. “We have very active and enthusiastic parents who work closely with our school and its teachers to maximize the educational program here,” Washington Principal Marsha Neville said.
Like its counterparts across the district, Washington School has always put a premium on building strong student reading skills and uses every opportunity it can to further that mission. The PARP program fits nicely into that ongoing campaign.
“I can’t thank our parents enough for their continued faithful support in our library reading projects at Washington School,” Ms. White said.
