Elementary Library Automation Project Advances in Huntington
A project to automate the elementary school libraries in the Huntington School District is advancing. The plan was originally discussed publicly at a School Board meeting on March 6, 2006 and is part of a technology initiative that runs into 2009.
The automation of the libraries is being moved up a year. “This would entail creating an electronic searchable database and circulation system for the six elementary libraries, which at this point have no automation,” said David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services. “It would also involve standardizing the circulation systems at both Finley [Middle School] and the high school.”
Trustees have encumbered funds from this year’s budget to pay for the project. The cost will run approximately $75,404 plus BOCES related charges. To help offset this cost, the district will avoid spending $40,000 in data processing contracted services. “The balance of the funds will come from the 2007-08 fund balance,” Mr. Grackin said.
Since next year’s school budget is expected to be extremely tight, officials want to complete the work this year. Mr. Grackin said the project will be “BOCES aidable” at a rate of about 50 percent.
