Hicks Scores 19 as Blue Devil Train Rolls
Kerry Hicks scored 19 points and dished out 10 assists as Huntington easily moved past Islip in the Suffolk Class A girls’ basketball quarterfinals before a crowd of about 400 in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. Midway through the first quarter Huntington found its groove and was unstoppable the rest of the way, building a double digit lead and never looking back.
The Blue Devils employed a gritty defense that forced numerous turnovers and were aggressive all over the court. Huntington’s starting five were in sync with each other all night.
Julie Forster had another big game, scoring 14 points and pulling down rebound after rebound to give the Blue Devils a strong inside presence. Huntington led 21-6 after the first eight minutes of play and was ahead at halftime, 44-16.
The Blue Devils turned to a running game early and were in a virtual full sprint the entire night. Junior guard Maria Marascia again turned in one of her typical performances, with a dazzling around of outside shots and drives, resulting in 10 points. Marascia was picked up several steals and could be seen diving for loose balls and forcing Islip mistakes.
Huntington coach Brad Reminick turned to his bench frequently and it responded with 21 points, including eight from Caitlin Ortiz, who connected on a pair of three-pointers. “Everyone was really on tonight,” Reminick said. “It was great to see so much scoring and such good defense.”
The victory propelled the Blue Devils into the semifinals at Harborfields on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
