Junior Parents’ Night at Huntington High School
The Huntington High School College Center is sponsoring a special night for the parents of current juniors on Thursday, February 28 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The evening will provide an introduction to the college planning process.
The workshop, which is open to students, will include college planning, the application process and a question and answer period. The session will be preceded by a 6:30 p.m. presentation concerning the Harvard Pre-Calculus course that will be offered beginning next September after the Huntington School Board approved a partnership between the district and Nassau Community College, which sponsors the program
College counselor Bernadette Walsh recently met with juniors during their English classes, distributing and discussing a questionnaire on “Appraising Myself as I Plan for the Future.” The questionnaires are due back in the center no later than February 29. As soon as they are returned, an appointment will be scheduled with the student and any family members participating in their college planning. Family conferences will continue through June.
The College Center is located in room 120 at Huntington High School. Ms. Walsh called it “a fantastic resource” for students searching for a college. “The center contains college catalogs and applications, financial aid and scholarship information, SAT/ACT testing preparation and registration booklets and information about summer programs for all students,” she said. “Computers are available for career, college and scholarship searches, college and financial aid information, and can be used to research colleges, take virtual tours, obtain applications and communicate with admissions offices via the internet.”
The district has made a substantial financial commitment to the center over the years and it is one of the busiest locations in the school each day. “We believe that this resource will help our students make the best choices and enjoy success in the competitive arena of college admissions,” Ms. Walsh said.
Ms. Walsh has also been busy planning a mini-college fair for April 2 that will take place over a 90 minute period during the school day. The spring college fair, which annually attracts representatives from as many as 100 schools, is slated for April 15 at 7 p.m. The Western Suffolk Counselors’ Association is also planning a college fair on May 13 at the Huntington Hilton Hotel from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
