Jefferson School PARP Program a Success

The Parents as Reading Partners program wrapped up another successful run at Jefferson Primary School as students showed once again that with a little encouragement, reading can quickly become one of the true joys of life.

Jefferson students cracked open thousands of books over the course of the initiative, dusting off volumes long untouched on bookshelves in homes, trekking down the hallway to the school library to pick out a new favorite or stopping in the public library on Main Street and checking out something on a different topic. The youngsters also paid visits to local bookstores and purchased new books that are already treasured possessions.

No matter where the books came from, organizers said the bottom line was that parents and children combined to read for thousands of hours, by setting aside a minimum of 15 minutes each day for the activity.

The school tracked the progress of students, who regularly submitted forms indicating the length of time they had read on each day of the program. Participants also entered a special drawing with the winners being able to eat lunch with the Jefferson Principal Margaret H. Evers in her office.

PARP seeks to promote reading as a daily activity and one that can rapidly develop into an integral part of a youngster’s life. It’s a habit that parents and teachers hope children subscribe to beginning at an early age. Through the years, Jefferson has always had a very high rate of participation in the program and 2008 was no different.
